2016 Pro Wrestling Iowa Awards

Welcome to the very first Pro Wrestling Iowa Awards! The entire PWI staff was polled on a few very important and prestigious award categories. We will go through the top three picks in each category while also showing who else received votes. Unfortunately those outside the top three will not receive any trophy. However! The winners will also not receive anything. Let’s begin!

Most Valuable Performer (MVP)

mvpgif

Ok. No, Montel Vontavious Porter did not win this award. I just couldn’t help but pick the low hanging fruit. The PWI is the most valuable PERFORMER to their promotion. Not necessarily the best wrestler in the world. Nothing shows that better than our winner:

  1. Broken Matt Hardy
  2. John Cena & AJ Styles (tie)

Also Receiving Votes: Kenny Omega, Okada, Jimmy Havoc, Shinsuke Nakamura, Young Bucks, Adam Cole

Best Female

Nothing is closer than a tie for number one! The two receiving the most votes have had a stranglehold on the top spots in WWE & NXT.

  1. Charlotte & Asuka (tie)
  2. Sexy Star

Also Receiving Votes: Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss, Io Sharai, Princess Kimber Lee

Best Striker

These are the wrestlers who love giving black eyes, fat lips, and bruises on top of bruises. Pray you never get hit from anyone listed below. Watch out for our winner’s elbow.

  1. Chris Hero
  2. Shinsuke Nakamura
  3. Asuka & Samoa Joe (tie)

Also Receiving Votes: Tommy End, AJ Styles, Sami Callihan, Kyle O’Reilly

Best Non-Wrestler

This award is given out to any manager, valet, authority figure, or advocate. Speaking of advocates…

  1. Paul Heyman
  2. Daniel Bryan
  3. Senor Benjamin, Shane McMahon, & Stokley Hathaway (tie)

Also Receiving Votes: Mick Foley, Nigel McGuinness, Lana, Reby Sky, Maryse, JT Davidson, Jason Michaels, Steve Corino, William Regal

Please Retire Award

This award is exactly what it sounds like. Sometimes performers have a hard time leaving the spotlight. This is our little push in the right direction even though our top three would probably need a bulldozer to feel it.

  1. Kane
  2. Vader
  3. Big Show

Also Receiving Votes: Jushin Thunder Liger, Shining Stars, Sid Vicious, Titus O’Neil, Jerry Lawler, Undertaker, Shane McMahon, Kevin Dunn

Best Feud

Feuds are an integral part of professional wrestling. Sometimes they are just as important as the wrestling itself. Feuds, storylines, angles, etc. Whatever you want to call them. Here are the best of 2016:

Also Receiving Votes: Adam Cole vs Kyle O’Reilly, Samoa Joe vs Finn Balor, Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn, AJ Styles vs Roman Reigns, Revival vs DIY, Chris Hero vs Matt Riddle

Most Overrated

Sometimes popularity doesn’t necessarily agree with talent. This was probably our most debated category.

  2. Dolph Ziggler
  3. The Young Bucks

Also Receiving Votes: Roman Reigns, Eddie Edwards, Cody Rhodes, New Day, Kevin Owens, Tye Dillinger, Sasha Banks, Hiroshi Tanahashi, ACH, Finn Balor

Most Underrated

Exceptional talent isn’t always rewarded with titles, merchandise, or screen time. Well, hopefully a made up award from Iowa will suffice!

Also Receiving Votes: Sami Zayn, Akira Tozawa, Johnny Cage, Zack Ryder, Heath Slater, Jay Lethal, Marty Scurll, Katsuyori Shibata, Apollo Crews, Tomohiro Ishii, Chuck Taylor, Chad Gable

2017 Breakout Star

We can probably all agree that 2016 held a lot of surprised when it came to talent. Lots of new stars were made. Let’s look to the future at who Pro Wrestling Iowa believes will have huge impacts in the coming year.

  1. Alexa Bliss
  2. Tye Dillinger
  3. Kenny Omega

Also Receiving Votes: Lio Rush, DIY, Luke Harper, Drew Gulak, Rich Swann, Marty Scurll, Crazzy Steve, Cody Rhodes, Tommy End, Pete Dunne, Jason Kincaid

Best Announcer

Announcing is a difficult job as evidenced by David Otunga. It just isn’t meant for everybody. There are some that make it look easy. Sometimes they make it look easy while covered in tattoos.

  1. Corey Graves
  2. Mauro Ranallo
  3. Daniel Bryan

Also Receiving Votes: Austin Aries

Best on the Mic

Much like announcing, being a good promo is hard to pull off, but the best make it look EXTREMELY effortless. Eh? Eh?

  1. Paul Heyman
  2. Kevin Owens
  3. The Miz

Also Receiving Votes: AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Adam Cole, Mick Foley, Chris Jericho

Thus ends the very first Pro Wrestling Iowa Awards! I would like to thank everyone for their beautiful acceptance speeches. I was very happy with all of the tasteful choices in tuxedos and gowns worn by our winners and nominees. In all seriousness, 2016 was an absolutely crazy year in wrestling. WWE continued their domination of the airwaves. We saw debuts we never thought we’d see in WWE such as AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura along with many others like Kota Ibushi and Zack Sabre Jr. in the Cruiserweight Classic. We saw others like Cody Rhodes, Ryback, Wade Barrett, Damien Sandow leave for other things. Will Ospreay and Ricochet had possibly the most talked about match of the year. The indie scene along with everything British is absolutely exploding. Here’s to a fun past year in wrestling and what looks to be an even crazier 2017!
